Hi Members!

2/24/2015 NAMI on Campus Updates

Upcoming Member Meetings:
Member meetings are held monthly at 2pm on Wednesdays in CLA 3216. Below are the upcoming meeting dates:

  • 3/25
  • 4/15
  • 5/6

Make sure to come to the meetings so that you feel even more connected to our student group, and if you have class and have to leave early or come late - that's completely fine (come anyway)!

  • Living Classrooms is an education and enrichment program for at-risk children in Baltimore. They have an after-school and supplemental education program that teaches them about health, wellness, the environment, and other topics.

  • Lesson Plan: We have been planning a lesson for the children on mental health issues (contact gbinns1@students.towson.edu  with interest for that project)

  • Parent Workshop: We have been asked to host a psycho-/educational workshop on mental illness for the parents of the children at Living Classrooms. The program will be discussing how to talk about and address mental health and concerns with children. It should dovetail nicely with the lesson plan we will be presenting to the students (so that the conversation can get started between both the parents and children instead of just targeting the children with the information and not informing the parents).
    • If you are interested in this new project of planning or executing the workshop, please email us at towsonunami@gmail.com!

Member Meeting 2/18:
Our next general member meeting is next Wednesday, February 18th at 2pm in CLA 3216!  Dr. Kasey Serdar will be speaking to us about Eating Disorders. Dr. Serdar is the Eating Disorder Services Coordinator of the Counseling Center's "The Body Project". The Body Project is a Peer Education Program that is actively changing the ways in which their discussion group feels about their bodies.

My Campus Health (www.mycampushealth.com)
Also, below you will find a flyer for MyCampusHealth.com, which is a website designed by one of our guest speakers who attended the Cultural Diversity Panel. The website is designed to be an online platform for students who wish to exchange stories regarding topics of mental health and wellness. For more information, visit www.mycampushealth.com.

Vice President Position (Graduate Student Position)
Lastly, we have a Vice President position available for Graduate Members! The position is for the remainder of the semester and will help you secure an executive board position for the upcoming year. An e-board position in NAMI on Campus is a great way to gain more experience in the field of mental illness as well as building your leadership and team work skills (i.e. a resume builder!) If you are a graduate student who is interested in being or is currently a member of NAMI on Campus – please email towsonunami@gmail.com with your name, a brief description about yourself/your interests, as well as qualities/experience that would allow you to help NAMI’s continued growth on campus.
